A canvas transfer refers to a custom canvas made by transferring an image from a paper backing to canvas backing. The end product is richer, deeper, and textured. It has a more vibrant feel and can be framed as a regular canvas without the need for glass.
The process is usually done following various phases: 1. Seizing the image - either by means of heat activated laminating film or by application of a liquid acrylic polymer to the surface. 2. Peeling the image from the paper - generally the more paper removed from the image, the finer the end product. 3. Mounting to canvas - affixing the image to canvas. This is done by lamination and vacuum pressing. 4. Stretching the canvas - usually by stapling the completed canvas to half-inch stretcher bars.
Close-up of canvas transfer In addition to the basic steps, a number of variations can be added to enhance the finished product. Effects such as brush strokes, aging, crackling, and tinted acrylic applications add to the beauty of the finished product.
