FEATURED ARTIST - July 2002Gustav Klimdt Gustav Klimdt was an Austrian painter and graphic artist. Early in his career he was highly successful as a painter of sumptuous decorative schemes. Klimdt was drawn to avant-garde art, and was influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau. His discontent with the conservative attitudes of the artists of his day led him to resign from the Viennese Artists' Association and set up his own organization - the Sezession -with a group of friends.
Klimdt often treats the figures in his paintings in a naturalistic manner, but embellishes the background or their clothing with richly decorative patterns recalling butterfly or peacock wings. This creates a highly distinctive style of extraordinary and lush sensuality.
Klimdt was much in demand with private patrons, as a portraitist as well as a painter of mythological and allegorical themes. He was highly responsive to female beauty, and had a reputation as being a great womanizer. In both his portraits and his subject pictures he stresses the allure and mystery of womanhood. He continues to be a popular and sought-after artist, with many publishers offering different editions of his work.
