FEATURED ARTIST - December 2007Dr. Seuss (1904-1991)Theodor Seuss Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) delighted millions worldwide as author and illustrator of some of the 20th Century's most beloved books for children. His earlier artwork often employed the shaded texture of pencil drawings or watercolors, but in children's books of the postwar period he generally employed the starker medium of pen and ink, normally using just black, white, and one or two colors.
Seuss's figures are often somewhat rounded and droopy. This is true, for instance, of the faces of the Grinch and of the Cat in the Hat. It is also true of virtually all buildings and machinery that Seuss drew: although these objects abound in straight lines in real life, Seuss carefully avoided straight lines in drawing them.
Recently the "Secret Art Collection" has been released. These
wildly imaginative creations show a
previously unseen dimension of Theodor Seuss Geisel's art. These sophisticated
and whimsical paintings were created for his own pleasure, and frequently depict
outlandish creatures in otherworldly settings. llustrator by day,
surrealist by night, Seuss created a body of irrepressible work that redefines
this American icon as an iconographic American artist.
