Diego Rivera Diego Rivera was a Mexican artist admired and appreciated both in his native country and internationally. As a child, Diego Rivera showed great talent with his drawing and was enrolled in art school at an early age. He studied at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City and in the carving workshop of Jose Guadalupe Posada.
Rivera traveled to Paris, and while there he was influenced by Modernism and Cubism. Rivera's influential social and political beliefs were censured by Nelson Rockefeller when it was discovered that Rivera was a communist.
Rivera is best known for his immense, decorative murals and beautifully stylized works depicting peasant occupations, costumes and popular personalities. He was admired for his ability to capture significant moments in Mexican history and to imbue his art with significant social content.
