FEATURED ARTIST - September 2002
Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) Leonetto Cappiello was born in Italy. Like many other artists he headed to Paris where he started painting caricatures for the French publication, Le Rire. This was followed by a number of assignments for various French newspapers. In 1900 he signed a contract to create poster designs for the poster publisher, Vercasson.
Gradually Capiello's style developed so that his images were created using solid lines and strong flat color. Whether creating an advertisement for fashion, liquor or food he brought a sense of fun and laughter to every image he made. His poster characters enjoy plates of pasta, pop open bottles of champagne, and walk in stylish clothing. There is usually a tremendous sense of joy in these wonderful posters.
His contribution to poster design contemporized this popular art form. Inspired by Cassandre and other well-known poster designers, Cappiello became involved with the poster scene in France, and fulfilled his dream of becoming one of Europe's most celebrated graphic artists.
Cappiello's original posters are extremely rare because they were only intended to be used briefly for advertising purposes. Vintage posters are now available through many publishers, and are generally offered in three sizes: 11"X14", 24"X36" and 38"X54". His exciting works lend themselves to a variety of framing techniques. In particular, the oversize pieces are well suited to being displayed as lacquer boxes or colorplak.
